The Crisis

The Syrian civil war, which began in 2011, remains one of the most profound humanitarian crises in contemporary history. This conflict has led to the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives, including innocent civilians and children, and has rendered millions homeless and seeking refuge in other countries. Against this grim backdrop, millions of Syrians have sought refuge in neighboring countries, with Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey shouldering the brunt of the refugee crisis. Lebanon now hosts approximately 1.5 million Syrian refugees, a staggering figure that amounts to about a quarter of its own population. This sudden influx has placed an enormous strain on Lebanon’s already fragile infrastructure, notably in the education sector. Many school-aged Syrian children, constituting about 47% of the refugee population, find themselves devoid of learning opportunities. This void in education is further exacerbated by challenges in digital literacy. As per a 2019 International Telecommunication Union(ITU) report, digital literacy in Lebanon stands at just 52%, a crucial factor considering the modern world’s increasing reliance on digital mediums for learning.

Understanding the ramifications of this, H.O.P.E. has made its mission to elevate the digital literacy rates among Syrian refugees in Lebanon and beyond. We firmly believe that by empowering these young minds with the skills to navigate the digital realm, we not only provide them with immediate educational opportunities but also equip them for a future where digital prowess is paramount. Our initiatives have involved distributing tablets and computers, organizing training sessions, and creating online platforms tailored to their unique learning needs. By partnering with local schools, tech institutions, and volunteers, H.O.P.E. is steadfast in its commitment to bridging the digital gap, ensuring that these children aren’t left behind in a rapidly evolving world. Through these endeavors, we aim to transform challenges into opportunities, helping Syrian refugee children share a brighter and more digitally inclusive future.
